Just as the butterfly and the moth images seem to become apparent, this quilt throws a bit of a curve to cause confusion about which is which!

Sharon Betts’ excellent color selection gives this quilt design much added interest so there is no rest until the illusion of all those balanced and surrounding squares in the background have been examined!

Moving from the center of ocher and golds, there is an illusive lavender square surrounding the central motif; however, this not part of the background: it is the colors worked into the butterfly and moth pattern that show up as the lavender square! Light and ever-so-light greens and neutrals form the band around the lavender and the final background is done in beiges and creams to help surround the quilt with light!

The interesting background geometry is perfectly suited for rows of pattern. The butterfly and moth images are rich in their own color tones, adding continued interest to the piece. Purples, greens, blues, reds, and all shades that comprise these colors gently twitter through the quilt…..it is indeed a clever quilt as each of these little creatures appears to be moving toward the light in the outer band of the background!
