Hawaiian quilts are among the most coveted and beautiful quilts in the world. They are noted for their beautiful interpretation of images, their design symmetry, and the rhythm of the quilted lines incorporated in the design.

This quilt is an interpretation of the Hawaiian beauties! The center design and inner borders of rust/orange/brown batik fabric have been carefully cut from a single piece of fabric just the same way we made paper snowflakes for our windows when we were young children. Then, the large piece of fabric has been hand appliquéd to a backing fabric.

What’s different about this quilt is the fabric: both the top color and the base have prints on the fabric. The base is a cream color with very thin lines that form an all-over delicate leaf pattern. These thin lines are a perfect compliment to the rusts in the appliquéd pieces on the front of the quilt.

Striking as the pattern is, there are some hidden surprises in the rust-colored fabric and especially in the same border and binding fabrics. If you look close you’ll see some animal faces peering back at you as they blend with the overall leaf pattern of the batik!

Where the traditional Hawaiian quilt has concentric quilt lines coming from the center of the quilt, this quilt has been carefully stitched to form the stippled texture across the entire piece. Both pleasing to the eye and relaxing to view, it is a striking work that emphasizes the overall single piece of fabric placed in the center of the quilt.

Easily adapted for the wall or nicely draped across a piece of comfortable furniture, this quilt design builds upon a traditional pattern developed by northwest designer Nancy Lee Chong. Although the center pattern could be duplicated, the combination of the fabrics and the design make this one of a kind!
